The Town of Woodbury employs two full time Animal Control Officers (ACO) who continually patrol the town and pick up stray dogs. They are dispatched through the Woodbury Police Department. The Animal Control Officers also maintain the town's Animal Shelter where strays are housed until their legal owners can be located. Every effort is made to find a good home for all dogs when their owners can not be found.
Frequently Asked Questions Do you have dogs available for adoption? Yes, but only on a limited basis. The only dogs housed in the town's Dog Shelter are strays which have been picked up but whose owners can not be located. The town does not have a Humane Society which accepts dogs from owners who no longer want them.
Do you pick up stray cats? Yes we do pick up stray cats. Please be advised we only do TNR with the "feral" cats.
How can a barking dog complaint be filed? Barking dog complaints must be filed in writing with the Town Clerk. The Town Clerk, then, must notify the dog owner of the complaint, giving the owner the opportunity to correct the situation. If the incessant barking continues, a second written complaint must be filed with the Town Clerk who will refer the matter to the Animal Control Officer. The ACO will then contact the complainant and assist him/her in completing the necessary paperwork to bring the dog owner to court.
What is a dog enumeration and has the Town of Woodbury completed one? The Animal Control Officer continually does a dog enumeration. That is, they are counting the number of dogs domiciled in the town and determining if they are licensed or not. If a dog is not licensed, a notice is issued to the owner explaining that a license must be secured within 10 days. If not, a summons is issued for the owner to appear in court. Before a dog license can be issued, proof that the animal has an up-to-date rabies vaccination is required. If the dog is altered (spayed or neutered), proof of altering must also be presented. The license fee is then reduced from the unaltered fee of $20.00 to $10.00. Dog licensing is done through the Town Clerk's office. There is a $5.00 fee added for dogs licensed as a result of enumeration.
